Glaucoma

* In glaucoma, more fluid flows into the ehe than can freely drain out.

* The pressure inside your eye ( intraocular pressure) increases, the optic nerve becomes damaged, resulting in permanent vision loss.

* Glaucoma can cause blindness if not treated

Types

Open-angle glaucoma : the angle between the iris and the cornea is normal, but the drainage system is clogged.

Closed-angle glaucoma : the angle is narrower than normal and the fluid cannot easily through the drainage system.

Diagnosis

# Tonometer- checks intraocular pressure

# Opthalmoscope : for viewing the optic nerve

# Gonioscope : checks the drainage angle

# Perimetry : measure visual field function

# Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) : checks the status of the nerves

Treatment

> Eye drops

> Oral medications

> Laser procedures

> Surgery
