Amblyopia or Lazy Eye

Lazy eye is a condition in which one eye has poor vision in relation to the other,as a result of abnormal visual development in early chilhood.

Lazy eye can only be corrected if treated during infanc or early childhood.Any child with a lazy eye over the age of 6 months should be examined by a doctor,so the condition can be treated as soon as possible.The condition is most effectively treated up to an age of 9 years.

Common causes

* Short-sightedness,far-sightedness and astigmatism

* Difference in the power of both eyes

* Squint,drooping kf eyelid

Detection and Diagnosis

Lazy eye kften goes unrecognized.Unless the child has a cross eye or other abnormality,the condition may not be obvious.A trained ophthalmologists will be able to test your baby's visual acuity.

Treatment

Normally,a patch is placed over the 'good eye' so that the child is flrced to use the 'lazy eye'.Over a period of time,the child will learn to correctly use his lazy eye,and good vision with both eyes will be restored.
